Each October, SHINE Mural Festival transforms St. Pete's shared spaces into a world-class outdoor gallery featuring top contemporary local, national, and international artists who use the walls and streets as their canvases.

What role does urban street art play in the redevelopment of St. Pete and other Florida cities? What is the history of the artform and how has it evolved?

Join Dr. Elizabeth Strom, USF Associate Professor, and Jenee Priebe, Director of the SHINE Mural Festival, for a look at St. Pete's street art scene and its relationship to urban revitalization, civic identity and tourism.

Jenee Priebe, Director of the SHINE Mural Festival, has been with the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance since 2018. Under Jenee’s leadership, SHINE has expanded its community engagement with increased emphasis on “Bright Spot” murals partnering with local youth and other underrepresented populations.

Elizabeth Strom, PhD, is Associate Professor in the School of Public Affairs at the University of South Florida. Her research focuses on urban development, affordable housing, art and cultural tourism and how these forces shape our cities. A recent publication, "Bohemia growth machine: Street art as an urban development tool in Florida," examines how street art initiatives and mural festivals have fostered city and real estate development in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Miami Florida.

PlaceMattersSP is presented by Preserve the ‘Burg and USF's Nelson Poynter Memorial Library.

    PlaceMattersSP is supported by AARP.

Lecture takes place at the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, located on the USFSP campus.
